Gokajo or gokyo (as referred to in some Aikido styles) is particularly effective against an armed circular blow aimed at the head. This technique evolved from the ancient art of swordsmanship in which lateral, slashing attacks with the katana ruled the day. It is similar to ikkajo in many ways, except for the grip of nage's (defender) upper hand in the initial forward thrust.

Uke attacks with a circular blow aimed at nage's head, neck or upper chest. Nage will extend both arms like in ikkajo, parrying the blow from the inside with his left forearm against uke's right forearm. Nage feigns a blow to uke's face to distract him, then immediately grabs his wrist with his right hand. This limits uke's maneuverablility should he be armed. Nage then proceeds to pin uke down like in ikkajo.
