Aikido is a highly developed martial art with roots in aikijitsu, jujitsu, sword and spear fighting as well as other ancient arts. It emphasizes a centralization of thought and action, and the extension of mental energy (ki). The style described here is Yoshinkan Aikido. Circular movements and flowing counter-defenses are its characteristics. It emphasizes self-defense and non-aggression. It is also infinitely adaptable in which its various techniques can be combined depending on the type of attack.

This website showcases the basic techniques of Aikido eg. locks and throws, as well as the types of attacks one might encounter. In Aikido practice, locks are not meant to be an end in itself, but a means to an end. They are used for controlling an opponent, not to break wrists or joints. Likewise, throws can be lethal, breaking an opponent's neck in some cases, but are controlled in practice for the opponent to roll over safely. Here, the defender is known as 'nage' while the attacker is 'uke'.
