Jet and Chien’s portrait session started on a beautiful sunny morning. The weather forecast predicted continuous rain for the rest of the day, but God smiled upon us and granted us a rain-free day. If only the sky was clear enough for a sunset… but who’s complaining?

Corporate Portraits for Annual Report

A recent portrait job required resourcefulness in using existing surroundings to my advantage.
This series of portraits were taken for a company’s annual report. Without using any backdrop, I utilized the wallpaper in the boardroom and arranged my lighting setup within this very small patch of wallpaper background, and using the very limited space in the boardroom.

Shooting with 3 speedlights in manual setting (for consistent exposure, TTL is not recommended), I took a few test shots using my assistant as a stand-in model until I got what I wanted. With the position clearly marked on the carpet using masking tape, each subsequent shot was easily and quickly done.

To learn in detail how portraits are done on location and in the studio, I recommend an effective 3-week flash photography online workshop that will inspire, guide and equip you with the skills to take your flash photography to the next level. Daily flash exercises will ensure that you remain motivated and retain the information learnt, while challenging you beyond your own limits.

A post-wedding portrait shoot for Shannon and Premela. Post-wedding or pre-wedding shoots are very much more relaxed than squeezing in a portrait shoot during the wedding day, and makes it possible to make a trip to somewhere off the beaten track.

Casey & Gloria’s Portraits

Casey & Gloria’s pre-wedding portraits were decidedly unusual, as you can see from the first photo. Casey is a big Star Wars fan, so “the Force” was with us that day, as we managed to get some pretty decent shots even though it rained almost the whole day!

We also put their ballroom dancing moves to good use…

Photo Finish exhibition in Melbourne

PHOTO FINISH is a major photographic exhibition showcasing a stunning and unrivalled collection of modern portraiture, a unique and stylish celebration befitting of the 150th running of the internationally renowned Melbourne Cup. The exhibition will be presented within the magnificent Atrium at Crown Melbourne to coincide with the 150th running of the Cup.

For this exhibition I was asked to photograph Dato’ Tan Chin Nam, owner of Australian-based Thoroughbred racehorses and multiple Melbourne Cup winner.

I conceptualised this shot to show his winning trophies and racing silk in a dramatic manner, yet not taking attention away from the man himself. Using a combination of available light and speedlight with snoot, this shot was created in practically 10 minutes. Kien & Pinar’s Portraits in Australia

Chris & Wan Sim’s Portraits

Chris and Wan Sim were truly blessed with this one day when it didn’t rain, after two days of continuous heavy rain on Langkawi Island, and the rest of Malaysia for that matter. The overcast sky became one big giant softbox, perfect for their pre-wedding portraits.

This was also the first time I worked alongside the talented team from Mayad Studios, who were there to create Chris and Wan Sim’s pre-wedding video, and their wedding day 2 days later (photos are here!).

Lighting Liz

I’m trying something new for a change… this time it’s having fun with dramatic lighting. It’s good to break away from our usual style every now and then, to discover new things about the way we work, and to supplement our existing skillsets. It’s a bit like cross-training… a multi sport athlete tends to be a stronger overall athlete when different types of training are thrown into the mix. Liz is a part time model who wanted some new shots for her portfolio.

Once in a while comes along a portrait request that’s delightfully refreshing. Evelyn wanted something that was a little surreal, a little magical… so we ended up with this series, which was entirely shot outdoors on-location. I prefer on-location shoots over studio shoots anytime.
